Future of Ag Task Force Meeting

Food Check-Out Week is an American Farm Bureau program to help teach Americans how to stretch their grocery dollars with healthy, nutritious food.  America’s farmers and ranchers are committed to producing safe, abundant and healthy food. The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is helping consumers find solutions to eating healthy on a stretched budget.  More information .....

AgriculturePenn State Extension and the Future of Ag Task Force are proud to sponsor Ag Awareness Week, 2010.

This year’s schedule includes:
Monday, March 15 -  Agronomy Day
Tuesday, March 16 - Vegetable Day,  Evening program - Backyard Gardens
Wednesday, March 17 - Dairy Day
Friday, March 19 - Business Development Day
Saturday, March 20 - Forestry/Natural Resources Day

All programs will be held at the Warren Extension Center in Youngsville, PA.   See the Ag Awareness Week Schedule (a PDF file) for program details.

To register for any program, please print and mail in the registration form.  All programs are “pay at the door.” The registration deadline is March 12, 2010

A little help is big boost for Mike Doty

Mike DotyPITTSFIELD, Pa. -- Ten years ago Mike and Reta Doty, who farm near here in Warren County, purchased their dream farm. It was a dilapidated farmstead with collapsing buildings and weed-encroached fields. They weren’t naive about the state of the farm; but where others saw despair, they saw hope. The Dotys thought they’d raise beef cows and Jersey bulls, but when a neighbor needed six cows milked by hand, the Dotys stepped in. Before too long, Mike Doty  was envisioning pastures filled with a healthy dairy herd and proper facilities to care for them. More...

Local winery strikes gold at farm show

When Alan Chapel and Tina West sent eight bottles of wine for judging at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, they hoped for a good result.

But, up against more than 300 other state wines, they hadn't counted on bringing home too much of the hardware.

The judges had other ideas. More than half of the winery's entries won. 

The winery's Big Bend Blush took the gold medal honors as best American wine variety. Bull Hill Blush and Fawnd Memories won silvers and Two Mile Red and Bigfoot Shadows brought home bronze. The other entries were Depot Red, Wildcat White and Tionesta Sunrise.

"I got five out of eight," Chapel said. "That's great. Way more than I expected."  More.....
